Fine cloth and the villas of the rich
Unsere italienischen Partner sind uns am nächsten: Man braucht nur durch ein Stückchen Österreich zu fahren und einmal die Schweiz zu durchqueren, schon kommt man in Como an, der Provinzhauptstadt, die unmittelbar an der Grenze liegt. Appiano Gentile, der Ort unserer Partnerschule, liegt von dort noch einmal etwa 15 km im Südwesten. Hotels gibt es in Como, deshalb waren wir auch dort im "Park Hotel" untergebracht.
Die "Scuola Primaria Guglielmo Marconi" hat über 300 Schülerinnen und Schüler und ist damit etwas größer als unsere Schule. Als Grundschule beherbergt sie die Klassenstufen eins bis fünf. G. Marconi war ein berühmter Erfinder und gilt als Vater der drahtlosen Telegrafie.
Our Italian partners are the closest ones for us: One only needs to pass Austria and go through Switzerland by a bit and already arrives in Como, the provincial capital which is immediately located at the border. Appiano Gentile, the site of our partner school, is about 15 km in the southwest from there. There are hotels in Como, therefore we were accommodated in it's "Park Hotel".
The "Scuola Primaria Guglielmo Marconi" has over 300 pupils and thus is a little bigger than our school. As a primary school it houses the class levels one to five. G. Marconi was a famous inventor and is regarded as a father of the wireless telegraphy.

Was für ein Empfang! Als wir zur Schule kommen, stehen bereits alle Schüler auf dem Schulhof und singen mit viel Temperament das COMENIUS-Lied "Den Menschen auf der ganzen Welt reich ich die Hand", natürlich auf Italienisch. Uns fallen gleich die Schulkleider auf - vor allem bei den Mädchen. Eine Tracht, die uns ein bisschen an Maria Montessoris Zeit erinnert. Hier wird sie offenbar von vielen Schülerinnen und Schülern mit Stolz getragen. Nach Musik und Tanz begrüßt uns der Schulleiter, Signore Alagna. Als Gäste sind Rachel und Brigitte aus Guadeloupe gekommen; Bethan aus Wales hat ihre Kollegin Emma mitgebracht, Dan aus Rumänien ist alleine da, und wir Peißenberger sind zu dritt (Bernhard Apel, Diana Kokoschka, Anja Kolumbus).

What a reception! When we come to school all pupils already stand on the school playground and sing with a lot of temperament the COMENIUS song "To everyone in all the world I reach my hand...", of course in Italian first. We notice at once the school clothes, primarily with the girls. A dress which reminds us a bit of Maria Montessori's time. It is apparently worn with pride by many pupils here. After music and dance the headmaster, Mr Alagna, welcomes us. As guests Rachel and Brigitte have come from Guadeloupe; Bethan from Wales has brought along her colleague Emma, Dan from Romania is on his own and we from Peißenberg are threesome (Bernhard Apel, Diana Kokoschka, Anja Kolumbus).
Wir erhalten die Gelegenheit, uns im Schulhaus umzuschauen. Wie allen anderen Partnerländern in unserem Projekt gibt es auch einen Flur, der Deutschland gewidmet ist. Er ist mit lauter Deutschland-Fähnchen geschmückt, und mit kleinen aus Papier ausgeschnittenen Bierkrügen. So sieht sieht man also die Bayern im Ausland!
We get the opportunity to look around in the schoolhouse. There is a corridor to each partner country in our project. One is dedicated to Germany. Irt is decorated, amongst others with a large number of beer steins cut out from paper. That's how Bavarians are seen abroad!
Das Schulhaus ist schon älter, aber in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft der Sekundarschule am Ort entsteht ein neues Schulhaus. Im Herbst 2008 bereits soll die Schule dort einziehen können.
The schoolhouse is already older but in an immediate neighbourhood to the secondary school of the town a new schoolhouse is erected. In autumn 2008 the school should already be able to move in.
Die Klassenzimmer stehen offen für uns und wir freuen uns über den herzlichen, ungekünstelten Empfang. Die technische Ausstattung ist beachtlich. Im Computerraum beschäftigt sich eine Klasse gerade mit geografischen Themen.
The classrooms are open to us and we are pleased about the warm, natural reception. The technical equipment is considerable. A class just works on geographical topics in the computer room.
Besonders begeistert sind wir von dem COMENIUS-Raum, in dem es eine permanente Ausstellung zu den Partnerländern gibt. Außerdem werden dort alle bisher ausgetauschten Materialien aufbewahrt. Beeindruckt betrachten wir die Haus-Modelle, die unsere italienischen Freunde zu den Häusern ihrer Region gebaut haben. Die "Casa Ringhiera" mit dem typischen Innenhof und dem durchgängigen Balkon im ersten Stock,...
We are particularly filled with enthusiasm about the COMENIUS room in which there is a permanent exhibition about the partner countries. In addition, all materials exchanged till now are kept there. Deeply impressed we look at the house models which our Italian friends have built according to houses of their region. The "Casa Ringhiera" with the typical inner courtyard and the general balcony in the first floor,...

Nach dem Besuch in der Schule dürfen wir zuschauen, wie Signore Placido, ein namhafter Profi-Schauspieler mit Schülern im Theater des Ortes Szenen des Stückes "Julius Caesar" von Shakespeare probt. Es ist erstaunlich, wie die Schülerinnen und Schüler sich führen lassen und die Hinweise des älteren Herrn aufgreifen und umsetzen. Es macht Freude, dabei zuzusehen. Die Arbeit des Schauspielers mit Schulklassen wird übrigens aus öffentlichen Kassen bezahlt.
After the visit of the school we get the opportunity to watch how Signore Placido, a well-known actor is doing a theatre rehearsal with students in the vilage's theatre. They are doing scenes of "Julius Ceasar" Shakespeare. It is amazing how the students let him guide them and how they take up and process the hints of the elderly gentleman. It was a pleasure to see it. The work of the actor with the classes by the way gets paid with public money.
Die Mittagspause verbringen wir zum Teil in dem herrlichen Park unweit der Schule. In dem früheren Herrensitz sind nun verschiedene Ämter und die Stadtbibliothek untergebracht.
The noon break we spend partly in the wonderful park not far from the school. In the former mansion now different authorities and the municipal library are located.
Den Nachmittag verbringen wir mit unserer ersten Projekt-Konferenz, in der über die Pläne für die kommenden Monate gesprochen wird. Nicht ganz leicht, wenn alles auf Englisch und Französisch gesagt werden und auch noch von allen verstanden werden muss.
In Como erwartet uns schließlich eine zauberhafte Abendstimmung über dem See und später ein einladender Platz mit einem gemütlichen Lokal für gute Gespräche.
We spend the afternoon with our first project meeting in which we speak about all the plans for the coming months. Not quite easy when everything has to be said in English and French as well and moreover needs to be understood by everyone.
In Como we are finally confronted with some magic evening mood regarding the lake and late an inviting place with a cosy restaurant for good conversation.

Am nächsten Tag besichtigen wir zuerst die neue Schule. Das Gebäude wirkt hell und einladend, wenn auch die Klassenzimmer nur mäßig groß sind. Es soll zahlreiche Fachräume geben.

The next day, we first visit the new school. The building seems bright and inviting athough the classrooms are only moderately big. There will be numerous special rooms.

Auf dem Dach gibt es Sonnenkollektoren.

Anschließend schauen wir uns die Sekundarschule an.
We then have a look into the secondary school.
Die Sporthalle ist geräumig.
The gym is spacious.
Ähnlich wie in unserer Partnerschule gibt es eine Mensa für die Mittagsverpflegung.
There is a canteen for noon catering like in our partner school.
Außerdem gibt es offensichtlich eine gute Ausstattung mit Computern und anderen technischen Geräten, zum Beispiel ein Sprachlabor.
In addition, the school is well equipped with computers and other technical devices, for example a language laboratory.
Außerdem gibt es Computer für den Musikunterricht. Die Schule hat einen großen Versammlungsraum, der z.B. für Lehrerfortbildungen genutzt werden kann.
Moreover, there are computers for the music lessons. The school has a big assembly room which e.g. can be used for teacher courses.
Eine Klasse unserer Partnerschule hat "Crazy Songs" vorbereitet, eine ganze Reihe vor allem englischer Lieder, die die Schüler nun mit großer Begeisterung vortragen. Zum Beispiel "The animals walked in two by two" über Noahs Arche.
A class of our partner school has prepared "Crazy songs" , a number of primarily English songs which are sung by the pupils with great enthusiasm. For example "The animals walked in two by two" about Noah's ark.
Die Gäste sind bei dieser Vorführung die "Stars". Und ähnlich wie auf dem "Walk of Fame" in Hollywood dürfen alle Gäste sich mit Handabdruck und Spruch in unserer Sprache auf einem Blatt für ein großes Buch verewigen.
The guests are the "stars" durin this demonstration. And alike on the "Walk of Fame " in Hollywood all guests are allowed to immortalize themselves with hand imprints and some lines in their language on a sheet for a big book.
Anschließend dürfen wir einen Blick in die Bibliothek werfen.
We may then take a look into the library.

Nach dem Mittagessen in einem Restaurant mit "Hausbrauerei" gönnt uns Augusta eine Erholungspause in ihrem Garten.
After lunch in a restaurant with "house brewery" Augusta allows us to have a break in her garden.
Dann brechen wir zu dem Bauernhof auf, den die Schüler nachgebaut haben.
We then go to the farm which the pupils have copied in their model.
Der Eindruck entspricht genau dem Modell.
The impression corresponds exactly to the model.
Besonders viel Vergnügen haben wir mit den beiden Hofhunden, die sich einen Spaß daraus machen, die Hühner zu ärgern.
We have particularly much fun with the two watchdogs which entertain themselves with annoying the chickens.
Anschließend erfahren wir noch etwas zur Stefanskirche und über die anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten in Appiano Gentile.
We then learn something about the church St. Stephen and about other sights in Appiano Gentile.
Die Apsis über der Freitreppe stammt noch aus romanischer Zeit.
Appiano Gentile ist uraltes Siedlungsgebiet.
The apse above the open stairs still dates from Romanic time. Appiano Gentile is an ancient housing area.
Am Abend gibt es ein Essen mit allen Gästen, vielen Lehrern, dem Bürgermeister, Herrn Gianni Clerici (vorne rechts, mit grauem Jackett), und anderen politischen Würdenträgern. Hier das Gruppenbild.

Der Mittwoch führt uns nach Milano, Mailand. Wir fahren mit dem Bus mit zwei Schulklassen mit, die dorthin eine Exkursion machen. Wie viele andere europäische Metropolen ist Mailand während der Stoßzeiten vom Verkehrsinfarkt bedroht.

The Wednesday leads us to Milano, Milan. We go by bus together with two school classes which make an excursion there. Like many other European metropolises Milan is threatened by traffic gridlock during the rush hours.
Erste Station ist das "Castello Sforzesco", der Palast der Sforza-Familie.
First station is the "Castello Sforzesco", the palace of the Sforza family.
Ein steinerner Rollerfahrer lehnt sich lässig an sein Gefährt und kommt deshalb in der ganzen Zeit auch keinen Meter weiter.
A stone scooter driver is leaning casually against his vehicle and therefore isn't able to move a single metre during all the time.
Die alten Gemäuer wurden im 19. Jahrhundert in romantischer Manier so vervollständigt, wie man sich damals die ursprüngliche Burg vorstellte. Hinweise auf das frühere Aussehen gaben dabei alte Gemälde. Das "Castello" beherbergt bedeutende Kunst-Sammlungen.
In a romantic manner, the old ruins were completed just like one imagined the original castle at that time in the 19th century. References to the earlier appearance was given by old paintings. The "Castello" houses important art collections.
Geschichte ist in Mailand auf Schritt und Tritt spürbar. Die Ursprünge der Kirche San Ambrogio zum Beispiel reichen bis in römische Zeiten zurück, in das Jahr 379.
History is noticeable in Milan at every turn. The origins of the church San Ambrogio for example reach back to to Roman times, to the year 379.
Auch die jüngere Vergangenheit ist präsent: Die alten Straßenbahnen sind charmant und scheinen zu fahren und zu fahren,...
The recent past is also present: The old tramways are charming and seem to drive and to drive,...
...obwohl sie inzwischen moderne Konkurrenz bekommen haben.

Dass Mailand heute eine Welt-Hauptstadt der Mode ist, hat sicherlich damit zu tun, dass in der Lombardei schon vor langer Zeit Seide hergestellt wurde. Auch in Appiano Gentile gibt es noch Seidenspinnereien. Die Maulbeerbäume, deren Blätter den Seidenraupen als Nahrung dienen, wachsen gut in der Gegend. So wusste man in Mailand schon früh so manches edle Tuch herzustellen. Die fleißigen Handwerker müssen letztlich viel Geld in die Stadt gebracht haben. Noch heute kann man an den Gebäuden den früheren Wohlstand ablesen.
That today's Milan is an international capital of the fashion has certainly to do with teh fact that silk was produced in Lombardy already long time ago. There are still silk mills in Appiano Gentile. The mulberry trees whose leaves serve the silkworms as food grow well in the area. So people in Milan knew how to produce noble cloth already in early times. in the end, the hard-working craftsmen must have brought a lot of money to the town. Former wealth can be read from the buildings of the old days.
Heute haben zahlreiche bekannte Mode-Label ihren Hauptsitz in Mailand. Hier gibt es Messen und Modenschauen, und auch die Schaufenster zeigen den berühmten italienischen Chic.
Today many well-known fashion labels have their headquarters in Milan. There are conventions and fashion shows, and even the store's windows show the famous Italian chic.
Ein eindrucksvolles Zeugnis des Mailänder Bürgerstolzes ist die Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Vorläuferin unserer heutigen Einkaufspassagen. Hier gab es schon in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhundert die Möglichkeit, exquisite Geschäfte trockenen Fußes zu erreichen.
An impressive testimony of the Milan civic pride is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, forerunner of our shopping arcades of today. Already in the second half of the 19th century there was the possibility of reaching exquisite shops without getting wet.
Bedeutendster Ausdruck des Reichtums der Stadt ist zweifelsohne der Mailänder Dom. Über 500 Jahre hinweg baute man daran, immer noch dem gotischen Stil verpflichtet, bis er sich in seiner heutigen Pracht zeigte.
The most important expression of the wealth of the town is undoubtedly the Milan cathedral. for more than 500 years people built, always feeling obliged to the Gothic style, until it could be seen in today's splendour.
Die Größe des Bauwerkes ist beeindruckend. Unglaublich, wie viele Steinmetze hier der Nachwelt ihr Lebenswerk hinterlassen haben müssen. Besonders spektakulär sind jedoch die Ausblicke, die sich bei einer Tour auf das Dach der Kirche bieten.
The size of the building is impressive. Unbelievable how many masons must have left their life's work to the posterity here. The views offered on a tour of the church's roof are particularly spectacular, however.

Am Donnerstag geht es aufs Wasser. Eine Bootsfahrt auf dem Comer See steht auf dem Programm. Unser Schiffchen ist ein umgebauter Raddampfer und heißt "Milano". Leider ist das Wetter nicht ganz so gut, wie es die italienischen Kollegen bestellt haben.

On Thursday we are going onto the water. A trip by boat on the lake of Como is on the agenda. Our boat is a transformed paddlesteamer named "Milano". Unfortunately the weather is not quite as good as ordered by our Italiean collegues.
Auch das graue Wetter ist nicht ohne Reize. Nebelverhangene Abhänge kontrastieren mit den in freundlichen Pastellfarben gestrichenen Häusern der kleinen Orte am See. Wir hören die klangvollen Namen der Reichen, die hier Villen besitzen. George Clooneys Haus verbirgt sich weitgehend hinter den üppigen Bäumen eines Parks.
Even the grey weather is not wihout its charms. Foggy slopes contrast with the houses of the
lake's small villages, painted in friendly pastell colours. We hear famous names of rich people who own villas here. George Clooney's house hides behind the exuberant trees of the park.
Wer möchte wohl nicht einmal für ein paar Tage in einem der herrlichen Hotels am Ufer des Sees wohnen, mit großartigem Blick auf die Berge?
Who would not want to live in one of the marvellous hotels at the shores of the lake for a few days, with a splendid view on the mountains?
Wie ein Traumgebilde taucht die Villa del Balbianello auf. Hier lebte einst ein Kardinal - also gibt es in dem Komplex auch eine Kirche. Die alten Bäume im Park werden sorgfältig geschnitten.
Like a structure from a dream Villa del Balbinello appears. Here once lived a cardinal, so in the complex a church is included. The old trees in the park are trimmed accurately.
In Bellagio, der "Perle des Comer Sees" gehen wir an Land. In den freundlichen kleinen Gassen fällt es nicht schwer, ein paar schöne Mitbringsel zu finden.
In Bellagio, the "pearl of the lake of Como" we step on firm ground. In the friendly small alleys it is everything but difficult to find a few pretty souvenirs.
Nächster Stop: Die Villa Carlotta. Sie war Künstlertreffpunkt und Privatmuseum im Besitz des Bildhauers Gian Battista Sommariva. Später gehörte sie der Familie Sachsen-Meiningen.
Next stop: Villa Carlotta. In earlier times it was a point of attraction for artists and a private museum in posession of the sculpturer Gian Battista Sommariva. Later it belonged to the family of Saxonia-Meiningen.
Nicht nur das Innere der Villa ist schön: Das Haus ist umgeben von einer großartigen, liebevoll gepflegten Parkanlage.
Not only the interior of the villa is beautiful: The house is surrounded by an awesome meticulously maintained park.

Uns erwartet eine Stadtführung durch Como. Zuerst begegnen wir in Form eines Denkmals dem Wissenschaftler Alessandro Volta, der hier zur Welt kam und seine Experimente machte.

We are taken on a guided tour through Como. First we meet the scientist Alessandro Volta in shape of a memorial. Here he was born and performed his experiments.
Der Stadtplan von Como zeigt, dass es sich bei dem Ort um eine Gründung der Römer handelt. Die alten Stadtmauern ziehen sich in der charakteristischen Form des Rechtecks um den Stadtkern.
The city map of Como shows that this place was founded by the Romans. The old city walls describe the characteristic shape of a rectangle around the city center.
In einigen schmalen Gassen ist noch der Geist des Mittelalters spürbar. Das alte Rathaus ist ähnlich organisiert wie das in Mailand: Oben im Saal tagen die Ratsherren, während in der Säulenhalle darunter die Stände der Händler Platz finden.
In some narrow alleys the spirit of medieval times is still tangible. The old town hall is similarly organised than the one in Milan: Upstairs in the hall the councillors were holding a meeting while between the columns under it the stands of the traders would find their place.
Berühmt ist auch hier der Dom. Obwohl er in der gleichen Zeit wie der Mailänder Dom gebaut wurde, sieht man hier nicht nur Gotik, sondern ein Gemisch unterschiedlicher Stile.
Here as well the cathedral is famous. Though it was built in the same time than the cathedral of Milan one cannot only see gothic style but a mixture of different styles.
Zeugnis der Handelskontakte Comos: Die Bauleute brachten aus den nördlichen Ländern die Fachwerkbauweise mit.
Proof of Como's trading connections: Constructors brought along half timber work from northern countries.
Die Stadt brauchte mächtige Stadttore, weil sie öfters mit den Milanesen im Krieg lag.
The city needed huge city gates because they were in war several times with the Milanese.
Mittagessen im Haus von Fiorella in der Nähe von Appiano: Italienische Gastfreundschaft in Höchstform! Lehrerinnen bekochen uns liebevoll. Der Tisch ist schön gedeckt, auf jedem Stuhl liegt ein Spitzendeckchen. Auch hier ist wieder spürbar: Die italienischen Kollegen haben ein gutes Team an ihrer Schule. Einer hilft dem anderen.
Lunch in the house of Fiorella close to Appiano: Italian hospitability in it's highest form! The table is beautifully laid, on every chair there is a laced doily. Here it is evident again: The Italian collegues have a good team at their school. One helps another.

Am Nachmittag gibt es noch einmal ein Projekttreffen. Die Abendsonne zeigt den Hauptplatz von Appiano schließlich noch einmal in freundlichem Licht.
In the atfternoon there is a project meeting again. The evening sun sheds Appiano's main place with some warm and friendly light.

Unter der Überschrift COMENIUS finden im nahen Park die "Jeux sans frontières", die "Spiele ohne Grenzen" statt. Der Beginn des Festes ist allerdings an der Schule. Kleine Artistinnen sorgen für einen farbenfrohen Auftakt.

Under the headline COMENIUS "Jeux sans frontières", games without borders/limits take place in the nearby park. The begin of the festival though is at the school. Little artists are providing a colorful start.
Anschließend marschieren die Nationen mit ihren Flaggen und Nationalhymnen ein und werden willkommen geheißen werden.
Subsequently the nations with their flags and anthms march in and are welcomed.
Für den besonderen Tag sind besondere T-Shirts angefertigt worden.
For this special day particular t-shirts had been made.
Außerdem singen alle mit Leidenschaft und aus voller Kehle.
Besides, everybody is singing out loud with passion.
Dann wandern alle in den Park hinüber. Teams, aus unterschiedlichen Klassen zusammengesetzt, erringen nun Punkte für die unterschiedlichen Partnerländer des Comenius-Projektes. Eltern haben hier die Vorarbeit geleistet und betreuen nun auch die Spielstationen. Farbige Leibchen kennzeichnen die Teams.

An der deutschen Station geht es wieder um "Bier", das hier per Becherkette transportiert werden muss.
At the German activity center it is again about "beer" that has to be transported by a cup chain.
Jeder strengt sich mit ganzer Kraft an.
Everybody puts in his whole energy.
Nach getaner Arbeit kann man Pause machen.
After work is done you can make a break.
Am Schluss der Veranstaltung steht die Siegerehrung.
At the end of the event there comes the award ceremony.
